Sweet Land by Ali Selim

Celebrate the 20-year anniversary of this home-grown film’s theatrical release with filmmaker Ali Selim, actors Alan Cumming and Tim Guinee, and writer Will Weaver.  When the elder matriarch of a farming family dies, the family is faced with the choice of continuing her legacy or selling the farm. Told largely through a reflection back to the family’s arrival to Minnesota in 1920, the film was shot on location and is an homage to the expansive landscapes of the state’s southern farming communities. Based on a short story by Minnesota author Will Weaver, Selim reflects on his own legacy as the son of an Egyptian immigrant with this film that tells an intimate story of family and migration. 2005, US, DCP, 110 min.
