Two of the actors and some of the crew from William Greaves’s Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One reunite 35 years after the original production in this continued deconstruction of documentary filmmaking. This time, the actors test how they and their characters have evolved in the blurry spaces between performance and off-screen “reality.” As the film progresses, the impacts of the intervening decades’ societal changes on the structures of film production become apparent. Produced by Steven Soderbergh and Steve Buscemi after seeing a screening of Take One at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival, Take 2 1/2 extends Greaves’s experimental approach to contemporary divisive understandings of reality and fiction. 2005, US, DCP, 99 min.
