Following her study of the crumbling Soviet Union landscape in 1993’s D’est, De l’autre côté (From the other side) finds Akerman shifting her focus to the border that divides the US and Mexico. Here, Akerman’s compassionate and curious gaze generously listens to the story of Mexicans journeying to cross the border. Shot nearly 25 years ago, this chilling portrait of migration remains an insightful rumination on the borders that divide us. 2002, France, DCP, Spanish and French with English subtitles, 99 min.
