Drive My Car by Ryūsuke Hamaguchi

Filmmaker Ryūsuke Hamaguchi introduces Drive My Car: his Oscar-winning road epic traversing love, loss, and the path of human interactions with exceptional emotional candor. Actor-director Yusuke Kafuku is invited to stage a multilingual production of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya as part of a residency in Hiroshima. His interactions with his wife Oto, the actor Takatsuki, and most notably the chauffeur Misaki chart his self-examination during this window of creative time. Based on a short story by the international bestselling author Haruki Murakami, Hamaguchi’s tour de force received four Oscar nominations, becoming the first Japanese film to receive a Best Picture nomination and winning best International Feature Film. 2021, Japan, DCP, in Japanese and Korean Sign Language with English subtitles, 179 min.
