This unique collaboration between filmmaker Ryūsuke Hamaguchi and composer Eiko Ishibashi only screens when accompanied by a live performance of its soundtrack. After working together on Hamaguchi’s Drive My Car, Ishibashi invited him to film material for her live concerts in and around her mountain home in Japan. The invitation and inspiration of the rural landscape grew into two films, GIFT and Evil Does Not Exist. In a nod to the history of silent cinema, GIFT has no spoken dialogue, relying instead on intertitles and Ishibashi’s live musical accompaniment to structure its inquisition into the relationship between sound and film. 2023, Japan, English intertitles with no spoken dialogue, DCP and live performance, 74 min.

Composer Bio

Japanese multi-instrumentalist Eiko Ishibashi’s work has ranged from acclaimed singer-songwriter albums to scores for film, television, and theater and exhibitions set to improvised music. She has collaborated with international artists such as Jim O’Rourke, Keiji Haino, Charlemagne Palestine, Merzbow, Giovanni Di Domenico, and Oren Ambarchi. Her own records have been released by Drag City, Black Truffle, and Editions Mego, among others. She won the Discovery of the Year award at the World Soundtrack Awards and the Best Original Music award at the Asian Film Awards for her film score for Ryūsuke Hamaguchi’s Oscar-winning Drive My Car (2021) and again won the Asian Film Awards’ Best Original Music award for her contribution to Hamaguchi’s Evil Does Not Exist (2023).
