Free First Saturday: Catching the Light

What Shapes Can Light Reveal? with Artist Drew Arrieta, 10 am–3 pm
Help build a shared light-catching sculpture with artist Drew Arrieta. Cut, tear, fold, and layer colorful translucent and reflective materials, then add your piece to a growing artwork that catches light, casts shadows, and changes throughout the day.

Light-Catching Windows, 10 am–3 pm
Create your own window to a colorful world with a stained-glass effect. We’ll be using light gels to create a transparent scene in mini light catching windows.

Dance on the Terrace with DJ Michel.Be, 10 am–12 noon and 1–3 pm
Come dance, wiggle, and sing along to summertime tunes while soaking up the sunshine on the Terrace. Get ready for a colorful mix of fun beats, big smiles, and sunny vibes with DJ Michel.Be.

Short Film: The Girl with the Occupied Eyes, 10 am–3 pm
Stop by the Bentson Mediatheque to watch a family-friendly short film. Once upon a time, there was a little girl who, even when out and about, was always distracted. Eyes fixed on her phone, she didn’t notice the world around her or anyone who wanted to play. The film is 8 minutes and will play on loop.

Guided Tours of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, 11:30 am (families), 1 pm (general audiences), and 3 pm (en español)
Join a Walker educator for a family-friendly guided tour of artworks on view in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden at 11:30 am (40 min.), take a guided tour for general audiences at 1 pm (60 min.), or join guided tour in Spanish at 3 pm (60 min). Tours explore a selection of artworks and include interactive discussion. Meet outside the Vineland Place entrance five minutes before the tour starts.

With family roots in Chicago, Michel.Be was born and raised in South Minneapolis. Radical healing and revolutionary practice lies at the core of their artistry and community work. As a DJ and curator, Michel has collaborated with organizations such as Intermedia Arts, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Walker Art Center, Juxtaposition Arts, Twin Cities Pride, First Avenue, and many more. DJ Michel.Be has also hosted radio programs and has been featured on local stations such as KMOJ, KRSM, JAZZ88, KFAI, and MN Public Radio. From vinyl to digital, DJ Michel.Be aims to embody the evolving spiritual chronicle of music in pursuit of the Afro Future.

Drew Arrieta is a documentary photographer and interdisciplinary visual artist based in Minneapolis. Working across photography, textiles, printmaking, and collage, their practice explores themes of resilience, solidarity, and cultural memory.
