Celebrate local artists and their work in our community through interactive art-making and more. This Free First Saturday invites you to connect, collaborate, and experience the impact of creativity.
On the first Saturday of every month, gallery admission is free for everyone at Free First Saturday. Free admission tickets are available in advance online and on-site on the event day from the Main Lobby desk. Free admission, 10 am to 5 pm; family activities, 10 am to 3 pm.
To help us promote future events and programs, this event will be documented with photography. By attending, you consent to appear in this documentation and its future use by the museum.
Flying Ribbon Kites with Out & About Book Bus, 10 am–3 pm
Take flight with Out & About Book Bus and learn how to create fun and colorful hand kites. Bring the rainbow inside using vibrant ribbons and bells!
Love Shapes Community, 10 am–3 pm
Join community artist and photographer Nicole Neri in creating unique geometric shapes to show how we all fit together. Decorate each shape with things you love about your community, trade and share them with your neighbors, and/or build a larger structure.
Hands Across the Walker, 10 am–3 pm
In this activity, created by Walker educator Tasia Islam, we’ll all lend a hand to make something beautiful! Show off your individuality and creativity to create a community mural made of hand cutouts.
Storytime with Out & About Book Bus, 10:30 am and 1:30 pm
Join Out & About Book Bus in the library as they read a selection of fun children’s books. All stories will be read in three languages: voiced in Spanish, voiced in English, and interpreted in ASL by MN Deaf Queers.
Out & About Book Bus is Parked on Vineland Place Outside the Walker, 10 am–3 pm
Out & About Book Bus is a mobile library connecting children and families in the Twin Cities and beyond with LGBTQIA+ and gender-affirming stories. Come in and explore!
MN Deaf Queers Welcome Table, 10 am–3 pm
Meet members of MN Deaf Queers and learn more about their organization, upcoming events, and get some Pride stickers.
Short Film in the Mediatheque: A City Trip, 10 am–3 pm
Explore downtown, with all the happenings of a bustling city. Created in partnership with artist Suzan Pitt, this film was made by kids in Minneapolis. The film lasts 3 minutes and will loop throughout the day.
Guided Tours of the Walker Galleries, 11:30 am (families), 1 pm (general audiences), 3 pm (in Spanish)
Join a Walker educator for a family-friendly guided tour of artworks on view in the galleries at 11:30 am (40 min.), take a guided tour for general audiences at 1 pm (60 min.), or join guided tour in Spanish at 3 pm (60 min). Tours explore a selection of artworks across current exhibitions and include interactive discussions. Meet at the Main Lobby desk five minutes before the tour starts.
Visit the Walker Art Center Library, 10 am–3 pm
The Walker’s library is open! Explore the stacks and find inspiration in the library’s collection of artful books. The library entrance is through the Art Lab.
ASL and Spanish interpretation will be provided for Storytime with Out & About Book Bus at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm.
