Drawing from a decade of personal videos, home movies, animation, and television clips collected by the artist, Gush is a kaleidoscopic, liberatory exploration of personal memory. Touching on violence, friendship, land, and the body, the film encapsulates what it means to celebrate and endure in the present. This feature-length debut by Fox Maxy (Payómkawichum and Iipay Kumeyaay from the Mesa Grande Band of Mission Indians) reminds us that film can be fun at the same time it is transcendent, intentional, and healing. 2023, US, DCP, 71 min.
Gush is accompanied by a screening of one- to two-minute films made by participants during Fox Maxy’s Mental Wellness Film Workshop at St. Paul Neighborhood Network.
Artist and writer Juleana Enright (Lower Brule, Lakota) joins Maxy in conversation following the screening.

Fox Maxy (Payómkawichum and Iipay Kumeyaay from the Mesa Grande Band of Mission Indians) is an artist and filmmaker whose work spans magical realism, horror, and mystery. Maxy uses cinema to illuminate both intimate and collective experiences of contemporary life. Her work explores themes of kinship, emotional well-being, nightlife, fashion, and environmental advocacy. Maxy’s style of storytelling blends grit and glam. She began her film career through independent and resourceful filmmaking. Maxy’s short film Maat Means Land received the Ammodo Tiger Short Award at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2021. Her debut feature, Gush, premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. In 2024, Maxy was awarded the Chanel Next Prize. In 2025, she conceptualized and led a Mental Wellness Film Workshop at the Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School. Her work has screened internationally at museums and festivals including MoMA, TIFF, and LACMA. Maxy holds a BFA in graphic design with a minor in art history from Pratt Institute. In addition to her creative work, she is a Native cultural resource monitor around San Diego County, helping to protect cultural sites during development projects.
Juleana Enright (Lower Brule, Lakota) (they/them) is an Indigenous, queer writer, curator, theater artist, and DJ based in Minneapolis. They have contributed to local literary platforms Pride Magazine, MnArtists, MPLSART.COM, Primer, and City Pages, and the national magazine Hand Papermaking. Enright has curated six art exhibitions, including Soft Boundaries, Anomalies, biskaabiiyang (returning to ourselves), and the Green Roof Poetry series at the Walker Art Center. They have received fellowships from the Emerging Curators Institute, MnArtists, Sixty Inches from Center, and Franconia Sculpture Park. Through their practice, Enright strives to examine the act of daily creation amid great chaos.
