“I think all my films are autobiographical, mainly because of place.” —James Benning
James Benning’s One Way Boogie Woogie is an experimental document of the industrial Milwaukee’s constantly in-flux landscape. Drawing inspiration from the structural camerawork of Michael Snow, the architectural solitude of Edward Hopper, and the rhythmic abstraction of Piet Mondrian, Benning set out with a rigid formal strategy—sixty, one-minute shots without any camera movement—to record his hometown. The striking compositions are peppered with minimalist narrative action and enveloped by a soundscape that expands beyond the frame. From railways and smokestacks to paper mills and parking lots, One Way Boogie Woogie carefully catalogs the textures of Milwaukee’s industrial valley. 1977, US, 16mm, 60 min.
