“A sonically magical combination … the music demanded attention, even as it verged on the hypnotic.” —San Francisco Chronicle
Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt’s Canto Ostinato is a minimalist masterwork of unusual flexibility. It consists of 106 “cells,” or sections, whose duration and dynamics are infinitely variable. As a result, artists are allowed great interpretive latitude, and no two shows are the same. Joined by esteemed pianists Matthew Aucoin and Conor Hanick, Sandbox Percussion performs an original arrangement of the composition for two marimbas, two vibraphones, and two pianos. The ensemble highlights the piece’s subtle harmonic shifts and pulsing musical figures, creating a secular space for sacred experience.
Copresented with the Schubert Club.
