Passings: Sam Rivers

Jazz saxophonist Sam Rivers, known for “an approach to improvisation that was garrulous and uninhibited but firmly grounded in intellect and technique,” has died at age 88. He played the Walker with Jason Moran.

Tony Bennett’s charcoal drawing of a nude Lady Gaga, made during a photoshoot by Annie Liebovitz, is up for auction on ebay. The $5,000 reserve hasn’t been met yet, but when it is, proceeds will benefit Bennett’s Exploring the Arts and Gaga’s Born This Way.
