What Do We Mean When We Say “Interdisciplinary”?
At the Walker, the term “interdisciplinary” describes our mission to embrace ways that many contemporary artists work, which since the 1960s has often meant loosening boundaries between artistic labels—painting, film, dance, performance—in favor of a more open and flexible view toward the art experience itself. The Walker’s Interdisciplinary Initiative (2016–2020), made possible by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, captures the work of artists including Maria Hassabi, Jason Moran, Rabih Mroué, Meg Stuart, and others who are working to find new meaning at the intersection of the performing and visual arts. Here, we share our research, publishing, and documentation of the four-year endeavor.
