“Dance that inspires, challenges, and entertains.” —Minnesota Star Tribune
The Walker’s annual dance showcase celebrates Minnesota’s vibrant and diverse dance communities. Each year, a roster of local choreographers and movement artists delivers powerful performances curated by a notable Minnesota dancemaker. This year’s program is curated by dancer/choreographer Ashwini Ramaswamy. A founding member of Ragamala Dance Company, Ramaswamy maintains a rigorous, multidisciplinary practice rooted in classical Bharatanatyam dance.
Ashwini Ramaswamy is one of Minnesota’s most prominent dancemakers. As a founding member of the Minneapolis-based Ragamala Dance Company, she has drawn widespread critical acclaim from the likes of the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Washington Post.
Ramaswamy’s practice centers on Bharatanatyam, a classical dance tradition from southeastern India. She grew up studying Bharatanatyam from award-winning artists Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy (her mother and sister) and has spent considerable time with Bharatanatyam guru Padma Bhushan Smt. Alarmél Valli. Ramaswamy is committed to maintaining the rigor, physicality, and humanity of her Bharatanatyam lineage, while honing her own vision for collaborative, multidisciplinary performance.
This event takes place in a wheelchair-accessible venue with accessible restrooms.
