Summer Art Lounge

This hands-on Art Lounge, designed by Sarah Nicole Knutson and co-hosted by Jonathon Rosemond, features two activities inspired by Suzanne Jackson’s explorations of color, light, structure, and material transformation.

Layers of Light: Suspended Symbol Paintings
Create translucent, suspended artworks using layers of vellum, acrylic paint, and other transparent materials. Tape-transfer techniques and other experimental approaches to collage will also be introduced.

Carried by Water: Symbol Paintings
Make a small painting on heavyweight cotton rag paper using personal symbols and imagery to explore memory, meaning, and self-expression.

Materials are provided and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis; supplies are limited.

Paul Crary is a resident DJ at Small Hours, the award-winning HiFi wine bar in Northeast Minneapolis. An avid vinyl record collector and genre-bouncing selector, he has thrown various DIY underground house parties in Los Angeles and Minneapolis for more than a decade. In addition to his gigs at Small Hours, Crary has DJ’d at Moto-I for HiFi Pop Up, Franconia Sculpture Park, the University of Minnesota College of Design Fashion Show, and other music-forward public gatherings such as Pro-Am, Eternity, and special events for the Walker Art Center. Sarah Nicole Knutson is a Minneapolis-based artist whose work examines connections between the emotional and the elemental through a process-driven approach to painting. Working primarily with large-scale, soak-stained floral compositions as
explorations of the feminine, she creates abstract pieces that reflect on fluidity, psychology, and the metaphysical. Knutson holds a BFA from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and her work has been shown at Good To Know, Hair + Nails, Public Functionary, Studio underground, Salon 21, and the Untitled Space in New York City. Alongside her studio practice, the artist facilitates participatory art experiences that spark creativity through material and process.

Jonathon Rosemond is a Minneapolis-based artist whose practice spans printmaking, painting, found-object sculpture, installation, and collage. His work explores the relationship between surface, structure, and material transformation through experimental processes and unconventional materials. Rosemond is a graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and his work has been shown throughout the Twin Cities. He was an inaugural member of Public Functionary’s Studio 400 cohort.

Kait Ryan holds a BS in Environmental Horticulture from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, and her professional experience is focused on public horticulture management. She managed the garden and grounds at Chihuly Garden & Glass and the Space Needle in Seattle, before returning to Minnesota to work in public horticulture with the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board. In her current role as Horticulture Manager, Ryan is active in integrated pest management strategies, formal garden and landscape maintenance, horticulture trends, and public engagement.
