Inside the grim walls of a prison in the mid-20th century, two inmates navigate the harsh realities of incarceration. Adapted from a story by Stephen King, the film centers on the recently convicted Andy (Tim Robbins) and Red (Morgan Freeman), the seasoned elder who helps acclimate Andy to his new life. Across the next 20 years, their unlikely friendship develops. At once a tale of survival through the carceral system, the film is ultimately a portrait of a deep and intimate friendship between the two men. 1994, US, DCP, 142 min.

This screening is part of the Once Upon a Time in Manhood cinema series, guest curated by Dallas Goldtooth.
